The Coach: Donovan van Gelder 

Donovan has been racing triathlon and the constituent sports since the mid-1980s. He has competed at the highest level on four continents and now, in his mid-forties with family and work commitments, he is still capable of competing at an elite level.

Donovan has not kept a personal tally of his race victories over the years but these include: Triathlon, duathlon, cycle road races and stage races, trail and cross-country runs. 

As a coach and for his own training, Donovan utilizes the latest methods used by top coaches and professional athletes but adapts them to fit into an 'amateur' lifestyle.

Over the last twenty years, Donovan has coached athletes of all levels, from recreational and lifestyle competitors to Masters World Champions and Olympians. These athletes have competed in countless events including:

  • Ironman and 70.3 distance triathlons
  • The Cape Epic and numerous other mountain bike stage and one-day races
  • Short course triathlon and duathlon
  • Road and track cycling
  • Road running including the Comrades and Two Oceans Ultra marathons
  • Trail running and Trail stage races
  • Canoeing including the Duzi Canoe Marathon
  • Open water swimming including the Robben Island swim and Midmar Mile
